Melissa Joan Hart is one of the top TV actresses of the 90s known for her memorable roles and screen presence in ‘Clarissa Explains it All’, ‘Sabrina The Teenage Witch’ and ‘Melissa & Joey.’ Besides being an actress, she is a director, producer, fashion designer and entrepreneur.
Hart was born on April 18, 1976 in Smithtown, New York in London Island. She is the daughter of Paula, a talent manager and William Hart, a furniture businessman. She is the first among the four children born to her parents. After her parents divorced in early 1990, she moved with her mother and siblings to New York City.
Career Rise
Hart began acting when she was just four, she acted in a TV ad for Splashy, a bathtub doll.By the time, she was five years old, she had already acted in 25 TV commercials. Some of her earlier works include Kane&Abel, Christmas Snow and a part of an understudy in ‘The Crucible’, a Broadway production.
In 1991, Hart landed the role of ‘Clarissa Explains it All’, the show that would make endearing to millions across the world. The show was about a teenage girl and her woes. The show won her four nominations for the Young Artist Award, out of which she won three of them.
Hart then, went to study in the New York University but could not complete her education. This was because she landed up with a TV movie called ‘Sabrina The Teenage Witch’ in 1996. This spawned a TV series featuring her, which went on to become quite popular.
Post ‘Sabrina the Teenage Witch,’ Hart went on to direct a movie called ‘Mute’, a 15 minute short film featuring live action, in 2005. The movie featured her sister Emily in a significant role. She also directed a movie called ‘Anger Cage’ in 2007. She was as part of the ABC movie called ‘Holiday in Productions’ which went on to become the top-rated program in the channels’ history, watched by 6.7 million viewers.
In 2008, Melissa became a part of the weekly TV series called Melissa & Joey, a sitcom featuring her and Joey Lawrence. She plays the role of a lady who hires Lawrence to help raise her incarcerated sister’s kids.
In 2013, she tried to use the popular crowdfunding website Kickstarter to fund a romantic movie called ‘Darci’s Walk of Shame’. Though she wanted to raise $2 million, she was able to raise only $51, 605. The pledged money was returned and she postponed the idea for some time in future. Hart also built a candy shop in Sherman Oaks, California called SweetHarts. The shop which opened in 2009 closed in 2011 due to a lawsuit framed by a previous employee on grounds of wrongful termination. Melissa and her husband Mark opened a fashion-line called ‘king of Harts’ in 2015.
