The Powerpuff Girls – This popular animated series was produced for Cartoon Network and ran from 1998 to 2005. It was created by animated Craig McCracken and involved the plot of three girls blessed with superpowers. The three girls Blossom, Buttercup and Bubbles live with their scientist father Professor Utonium in a fictional city of Townsville in USA. The three girls fight antisocial elements when they are called upon to do so by the mayor of the city. The show ran across 6 seasons and had 178 episodes. The Powerpuff Girls were nominated for nine Annie Awards, Six Emmy Awards and a Kids’ Choice Awards.
Johnny Bravo – Johnny Bravo was a cartoon show of a brawny beefcake of a guy who tries to score with girls and fails every time. The show was created by Van Partible for Cartoon Network. The show became so popular that a muscular man thinking too much of himself is often compared to Johnny Bravo. The show ran from 1997 to 2004, covered 4 seasons and included 67 episodes. Johnny Bravo was successfully shown across many other countries and met with a great reception even in its reruns.
Clarissa Explains it All – The teenage sitcom ran successfully from 1991 to 1994. Conceived by Mitchell Kriegman for Nickelodeon, Clarissa Darling is a teenage girl who shares her pre-adolescent woes and experiences like school-related issues, studies, boys, acne-breakouts etc with the audience Clarissa was played by Melissa Joan Hart. The show covered 65 episodes and ran for five seasons from 1991 to 1994.
Boy Meets World – This popular American TV sitcom covered coming of age sequence of events and things that were happening everyday in the life of Cory Matthews. Across 7 seasons (158 episodes) which ran from 1993 to 2000, the show chronicled the events in the life of Cory and his friends from their pre-adolescent school days to life in college to his life as a married man. The show has spun a sequel called Girl Meets World, which focuses on Cory and his pre-teen daughter Riley, which aired on Disney Channel in 2014.
Cow and Chicken – This animated TV series created for Cartoon Network by David Feiss followed the quirky adventure of two unlikely siblings, Cow and Chicken. The show ran from 1997 to 1999, covering 4 seasons (52 episodes). Though critics gave mixed reviews, it is now a classic and a favorite of many. The show was nominated for two Emmy Awards.
Aladdin – First came the successful movie by the same name, which was followed by the animated TV series which met with a stupendous response, in its original run from 1994 to 1995. It was based on the plot of Aladdin living with his beautiful princess Jasmine and monkey side-kick Abu, the fasting-talking Genie and ‘Magic Carpet’.
Teletubbies – This BBC’s adorable TV series was aimed at preschool children and ran from 1997 to 2001. It was produced by Ragdoll Productions and covered 365 episodes. The show went on to win a BAFTA in 1998 and became popular in almost all the countries, it was played. Even though the show was aimed at preschoolers, it was well-received by young adults and even the older lot. The mix of vibrant color, quirky designs and physical comedy was quite an addictive watch.
Spider-Man – The cult superhero series has been successful in every format, movie, comics or TV series and the 1994 edition spawned a whole generation of viewers receptive to the successful movies that were to follow by the turn of the next decade. The show created by Marvel Comics ran on Fox Kids from 1994 to 1998, produced and edited by John Semper Jr. The popular theme song with the lyrics was done by Joe Perry of Aerosmith.
Are You Afraid of the Dark – Are You Afraid of the Dark was a Canadian horror fantasy aimed for kids and young adults. It involved a set of young people who called themselves members of ‘The Midnight Society’. They would meet at a secret palce in the forest and each member would tell a scary story to the others that would be replayed to the viewers. The original series ran from 1990 to 2000 aired on YTV(Canada) and Nickelodeon’s Snick.
The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air –Starring Will Smith as a teenager, the popular American sitcom chronicled his life as a successful teenager from West Philadelphia. It dealt about culture shock and lifestyle clashes when he moves in to stay with his wealthy uncle and aunt in the Bel Air mansion, after getting into a fight at a basketball court. The show ran for six successful seasons (148 episodes). The show aired on NBC ran from September 1990 to May 1996 and won multiple awards and nominations.
